High schools: Smith Academy's Caitlin Graves scores 7 goals in win over Mount Everett

Caitlin Graves probably ran out of goal celebrations midway through the second half of the Smith Academy girls soccer team’s 8-1 beat down of Mount Everett in Hatfield on Monday afternoon.
The Falcons senior netted a whopping seven goals in the win, lifting Smith Academy to an easy win and a 2-0 record on the season. Graves scored twice in the first half before tacking on five more in the second half. Vivian Higuera added the other goal as well as an assist for Smith and Piper Higuera assisted Graves three times.
Madison Zononi saved seven of eight shots that came her way in goal for the Falcons, while Maya Bell, Annabelle Van Geel, Anna Scagel and Emma Czarniecki recorded assists to aid Graves during her big day.
During Smith Academy’s 4-0 win over Pioneer Valley in its opener last week, Graves scored all four goals. She now stands at 11 goals through only two games in 2024, a blazing start to the fall season.
Smith Academy (2-0) looks to continue its strong first couple weeks of play on Wednesday when it hosts Springfield International Charter School at 4 p.m.
Hampshire 3, Pittsfield 2 — All three of the Raiders’ goals came in the first half and they hung on to defeat the Generals on Monday. Hampshire recorded 25 shots on goal in the win.
Shayne Moynahan, Maggie Lashway and Olivia Whittaker were the goal scorers for the Raiders, while Addie Miklasiewicz and Olivia Whittaker tallied assists. Ella Cleary stopped four shots in the box.
Smith Voc 8, Hampden Charter 0 — Caitlin Willard scored a hat-trick to lead Smith Voc to a home win on Monday afternoon.

South Hadley 5, Wahconah 0 — The Tigers made the trip up to the Berkshires on Monday afternoon and came back with a resounding win.
Ally Fleury notched a goal and two assists and Maddie Soderbaum scored a goal and assisted another. Kate McArdle, Cara Deal and CC Gurek all scored as well.
Easthampton 3, St. Mary’s 0 — The Eagles went up 2-0 at halftime on the road and slotted a third goal home in the second half to get their year off to a 3-0 start.
Arie Kuchyt scored a goal and added an assist, and Mackenzie Coffey and Samone Young also found the back of the net.
Holyoke 5, Ware 1 — Kyra Lippman’s hat trick and assist helped a scorching Purple Knights offense get past Ware on Monday afternoon.
Leila Figueroa and Kayshaly Garcia scored a goal each for Holyoke, and Grace Bechard, Selina Alicea and Garcia dished out assists in the win.
Southwick 2, Amherst 1 – Maeve Fitzgerald scored for the ‘Canes, assisted by Madeline Hockman.
Granby 3, Palmer 2 – The Rams edged Palmer thanks to two goals from Maggie Crawford and another from Kalli White.
Northampton 1, West Springfield 1 — The Blue Devils trailed 1-0 at halftime, but a Will Senn-McNally free kick from 20 yards out sailed into the back of the net to knot things up with 18 minutes left.
The game would stay tied the rest of the way, and Northampton goalie Salem Gregory played a large role in that with half a dozen saves in net.
Smith Academy 3, Mohawk Trail 0 — Shae Moulton’s scored a pair of second-quarter goals for the Falcons, which looked sharp in a shutout win over the Warriors in Buckland.
Isabella Gavron added a goal of her own on a penalty stroke in the fourth quarter to officially put the game out of reach. Molly O’Brien and Alexa Jagodzinski tallied assists and Smith Academy showcased its defense by prohibiting Mohawk Trail from putting any shots on goal.
Southwick 3, Northampton 1 — Blue Devils goalie Charlotte Johnson-Mersack came up with 10 big saves including a penalty stroke save, but it wasn’t enough to tame the powerful Rams offense.
Camilla Brewer scored the lone Northampton goal, assisted by Maya Berman-Lagier.
Belchertown 3, Pope Francis 0 — The Orioles earned a hard-fought sweep over the Cardinals behind a combined 20 kills from Gianna Picardi (11) and Melina David (nine), who accounted for 66 percent of Belchertown’s kills.
Set scores were 25-21, 25-23, 25-20 on Monday afternoon.
Vivian Ross dished out 27 assists, Layla Liminski added four kills and Abby Almeida put down three, while Picardi struck for six aces.
Renaissance 3, Smith Vocational 1 — An all-around outing from Heidymar Diaz-Lopez wasn’t enough as the Vikings dropped Monday’s match with Renaissance in four sets. Diaz-Lopez recorded nine kills, 13 assists, six digs and a pair of aces in the 25-22, 25-7, 14-25, 25-22 defeat.
Abby Desrochers (five kills, three aces, six digs, two blocks), Leah Franklin (seven kills, four blocks) and Brook Wolcott (three aces, five digs, two kills) each contributed at a high level for Smith Voc.
South Hadley 3, Hampden Charter 2 – The Tigers pulled off a comeback from two sets down Monday night, winning 16-25, 23-25, 25-20, 25-11, 15-6.
South Hadley missed 15 serves in the first two sets, but led by three aces from captain Ella Schaeffer, they turned it around. In the fourth set, Tali Quinn served 16 straight points and tallied five aces. She started the fifth with six straight serves and another pair of aces to give South Hadley a commanding 6-0 lead. Thanks to five more aces from Grace Matyszewski, the Tigers pulled it out.
East Longmeadow 155, Frontier 163 — The Redhawks showed well against a powerhouse Spartans squad, coming up just eight strokes short in an independent match played Monday at Veterans Golf Course in Springfield.
Brady Wood shot 38 for Frontier’s low round of the day, while teammates Cam Skiffington (39), Ryan Cetto (43) and Porter Hall (43) also figured into the scoring. East Longmeadow had seven players shoot 42 or better, led by medalist Cam Erickson’s 35.
Belchertown 168, Chicopee Comp 184 — Michael Murray put forth a strong round of 38 to earn match medalist honors by five strokes in the Orioles’ third win of the season (3-1).
Brady Jolly (43), Ryan Shea (43) and Jared Haynes (44) all scored for Belchertown, while Comp’s Nolan Banville led the Colts with a 43.
Hopkins 187, Smith Vocational 203 — Golden Hawks eighth grader Ryley Regan ripped through Holyoke Country Club’s par 36 course with a 1-under round of 35 to pace all competitors Monday afternoon.
Jack Dyjach (39), Chace Earle (52) and Laney Crutch (61) rounded out Hopkins’ scorers.
For the Vikings, Pat Gougeon shot a team-best 47 while Alex Fournier (50), Dom Crouchier (53) and James Lavallee (53) also chipped in for Smith Voc.
South Hadley 162, Northampton 166 — Ryan MacGregor led the way for the Tigers with a stellar 4-under round of 32, seven shots ahead of the next competitor at Ledges Golf Club on Monday. MacGregor is putting together an impressive start to the season with his match average being a 35.5. Liam Yates (42), Jameson Webber (44) and Matthew Blaser (44) scored for South Hadley as well.
Blue Devils senior Reilly Fowles (39) was the only other golfer to break 40. Behind him was Jamie Fowler (40), Reed O'Connor (42) and Cody Keel (45).
Hampshire 169, Monson 186 — The Raiders broke 170 as a team thanks to four rounds of 45 or better at Beaver Brook Golf Course on Monday afternoon. Ashton Lashway shot a 4-over round of 40 to earn medalist honors.
Brayden Fennessy (41), Colby Cabrini (43) and Robert Herman (45) each turned in strong performances for Hampshire as well.
Girls volleyball
Melrose 3, Frontier 0 — The Redhawks put forth a valiant effort in the first set, but a strong Melrose team pulled it out and got the best of the them over the weekend. Frontier lost the first set 25-23 before dropping sets two and three 25-17, 25-11.
Abigail Hernandez (eight) and Bailey Martin (five) led the Hawks in kills, Parrish Stilla dished out 14 assists and Arianna Miller dug up a team-high nine balls. The Melrose line up front was too much for Frontier to figure out in the loss.
Girls soccer
Northampton 4, Chicopee 0 — A pair of goals in each half helped the Blue Devils breeze to a dominant victory on Friday night, with Willow Claps’ two tallies leading the way.
Olivia Busone and Allie Sullivan each netted a goal as well, while Teagan McDonald, Claps, Margaux Galvin and Lilah Sage all recorded assists. Immani Power-Greene stopped two shots in goal in the win.
