High schools: Diaz Lopez propels Smith Vocational girls volleyball to victory

Heidymar Diaz Lopez had seven aces, two blocks and eight kills for the Smith Vocational girls volleyball team in a dominant sweep over Duggan Academy on Wednesday.

Set scores were 25-18, 25-11, 25-17. 

Katelyn Fedora (three aces, one block, one assist, two kills), Brook Wolcott (three aces), Jaelyn Kulas (two aces, one assist, two digs and four kills) all helped the offensive attack while Roma Bentrewicz (18 assists, one kill and one ace) facilitated it.

Westfield 3, Frontier 1 — Frontier fell to 1-2 on the season, dropping a 25-23, 25-22, 24-26, 25-20 decision on the road in Westfield on Wednesday.

Abigail Hernandez led the way with 17 kills and Parrish Stilla tallied 25 assists. Hernandez also led Frontier with 14 digs, with Olivia Machon right behind at 13.

Golf

Frontier 153, Pioneer 181 – Ryan Cetto fired a 34 to finish as the match medalist in the Redhawks’ 153-181 win over Pioneer Valley at Cherry Hill Golf Course in Amherst on Wednesday afternoon. Cam Skiffington joined his teammate with a sub-40 round of his own, shooting a 37 as the pair led the Redhawks past the Panthers.

Porter Hall (40) and Jacob Cornelison (42) also scored for Frontier in the victory while Brayden Thayer (38), Ben Werner (43), Ethan Mauthe (48) and Cam Curtis (52) scored for Pioneer.

Amherst 185, Monson 195 — Ben Scott took home  medalist honors with a 37, followed by Graham van Giessen with a 48 and Nate Ziomek and  Owen Howard with 50s. Amherst moves to 1-2 on the season.

Hampshire 173, Mohawk Trail 207 — Four Raiders golfers shot a 45 or better en route to a big win over the Warriors on Wednesday.

Brayden Fennessy (41), Cole Boissonneault (42), Riley Florek (45) and Cam Jarosz (45) were the scorers for Hampshire, all of which shot better than Mohawk’s lowest score (46).

Girls soccer

Smith Voc 4, McCann Tech 0 – Caitlin Willard scored two goals and added two assists to lead the Vikings to a season-opening win. Monique Fredette and Willow Hicks also added their names to the scoresheet and Kate Wolcott tallied an assist.

South Hadley 2, Agawam 0 – Katherine McArdle and Sophie Quinn found the back of the net as the Tigers earned a road victory in Agawam on Wednesday to improve to 1-0-1.

Olivia Athas made eight saves to pick up the first shutout of her varsity career. Taylor Bullough recorded an assist for the Tigers/

Boys soccer

South Hadley 6, South wick 1 — Matt Gillis and Carlos David each scored twice to pace the Tigers in their offensive onslaught on Wednesday. Nolan Masse and Ben Gillis each scored as well.

Moki Kovacs, Jackson Keller, Matt Gillis, David and Masse all added assists in the win while Noah Carillon stopped one shot in net.

Frontier 7, Mahar 0 — Henry Pleasant and Gus Radner each tallied two goals and an assist to lead a resounding performance to move the Red Hawks to 2-0. 

Sam Bakare, Ian Paciorek and Grayden Gifford also scored and TJ Donovan added two assists.

Chicopee Comp 3, Holyoke 0 — The Purple Knights trailed 1-0 at halftime before the Colts added a pair of insurance goals in the second half to pull away on Wednesday night.

Holyoke goalie Landon Koziara was terrific in goal with 10 saves.

Field hockey

Amherst 5, Palmer 0 — Aria Haupt scored a hat-trick and Sylvie Walker and Zoey Candito also registered on the scoresheet to lead the ‘Canes  to a season-opening win.

Hampshire 1, Franklin Tech 1 — Neely Rondeau scored the Raiders’ lone goal and Rylie Simmons made nine saves to move Hampshire to 0-1-1 on the season.

Boys cross country

Granby 22, Pope Francis 35
Southwick 27, Granby 30 —
The Rams split their two meets on the day, beating Pope Francis and falling to Southwick.

Nathan Hutchinson (Granby, 19:17), Connor Martin (Southwick, 19:53), Trevor Sullivan (Granby, 19:55), Adam Rokicki (Southwick, 20:14) and Nate Benson (Granby, 20:20) each cracked the Rams-heavy top five.

Girls cross country

Granby 20, Southwick 37
Granby 27, Pope Francis 29 —
The Rams improved to 2-0 after a strong showing at Dufresne Park in Granby – a very technical and difficult course.

Addison Hill, 24:26 (Granby), Grace Cooney (Granby, 25:17), Emma Caproni (Pope Francis, 25:29), Madelyn Battista (Pope Francis, 26:50) and Quinn Cook (Granby, 26:56) rounded out the top five, with Hill taking first place.

Northampton 1, Turners Falls 1 — Ledwin Villafana scored a breakaway goal to open the scoring for Turners Falls in the second quarter, but Northampton’s Maya Berman-Lagier equalized in the fourth quarter.

Northampton dominated possession and goalie Charlotte Johnson-Mersack made five saves.
