High schools: Balanced effort lifts Holyoke baseball past South Hadley, 4-2

Seven different Holyoke baseball players got hits as the Purple Knights edged South Hadley, 4-2, in action on Wednesday.

Nathan Pok led Holyoke with two hits and two runs. Pablo Tapion and Raul Lopez Ofray each knocked in one run and had a hit each.

Pitcher Owen Pecia struck out three batters and allowed one earned run in the win. 

South Hadley’s Nick Carillon paced the Tigers with two hits, an RBI and a run scored. Pitcher Matthew Drobiak hurled all seven innings, striking out three and walking three. 

McCann Tech 5, Smith Academy 3 – After three innings, Smith Academy held a 3-2 lead over McCann Tech, but the Hornets score three runs over the final two innings to retake the lead and emerge with the win. 

Smith pitcher Griffin Smiarowski threw 6 1/3 innings, striking out eight and walking four. Harrison LaFlamme closed out the game on the mound, walking one and allowing one earned run.

Logan Graves and Ryan Belina both had two hits and a run for the Falcons.

Frontier 13, Easthampton 1 (5) —The first meeting of the season between the Redhawks and the Eagles saw Frontier come away with a tightly contested 6-5 win.

Frontier made sure it wouldn’t be that close the second time around. 

The Redhawks exploded for 10 runs in the second while Liam Skribiski-Banack and Max Skribiski-Banack combined to allow just four hits as Frontier ran away with a Suburban League West victory in five innings on Wednesday in Easthampton. 

Liam Skribiski-Banack tossed the opening three innings, allowing just four hits and striking out two. Max Skribiski-Banack came on for the final two innings, not allowing a hit and striking out four. 

Liam Skribiski-Banack helped himself at the plate, knocking two hits that brought in two runs. Miles Ferreira had a pair of hits and knocked in a run, Grayson Loos doubled to bring in two runs, Wyatt Edes had a hit and an RBI, Eathon Bryant tallied a hit while Tyler Cusson drove in three runs in the victory. 

West Springfield 8, Amherst 0 — Neil Cunniffe registered the Hurricanes’ lone hit with a single in the first inning. 

Softball

Smith Vocational 28, Duggan 5 (5) – Daelin Murdock and Makayla Tatro both slammed home runs and Josilyn Dubay led the Vikings with four hits in a five-inning win over Duggan.

Murdock and Jennifer Bouchard split time in the circle; Murdock threw three innings, striking out five and walking four, and Bouchard threw two innings, striking out three and walking one. 

Murdock finished with two hits, four runs and one RBI, Tatro drove in three runs and Annalise Kaczenski plated five times and added three hits. 

South Hadley 13, Belchertown 1 – Isabella Schaeffer struck out 14 and didn’t allow a hit for the Tigers. She also added an RBI.

South Hadley’s Jae Velazquez doubled twice among her five hits and had three RBIs.

Erin Bullough (three hits) and Amaya Dunn (two hits) drove in two runs each for South Hadley.

Belchertown’s Olivia Lafayette scored the Orioles run in the fourth inning and struck out three in the circle.

Greenfield 11, Frontier 4 — Ashley Taylor struck out four for Frontier in the loss.

Skyler Steele knocked a pair of hits, Delaney Fifield doubled while Taylor and Hailey Hutkoksi hit safely for the Redhawks. 

Girls lacrosse

Granby 15, Chicopee Comp 1 — The Rams had a 10-0 lead at halftime and continued their domination in the second half against Chicopee Comp. 

Ella Laliberte scored nearly half of the Rams’ goals, notching six goals and one assist. Ava-Elizabeth Loughman finished with five points (2G, 3A) and Kelly-Anne Kennedy and Mylin Laliberte added two goals each for Granby. 

Goalie Faith Ramos made one save in the win.  

East Longmeadow 22, Northampton 2 – Eloise Ruberti notched both of the Blue Devils’ goals in a loss to East Longmeadow.

Imanni Power-Greene added one assist for Northampton. 

Boys tennis

PVCICS 4, SICS 1 – The Dragons dropped just one contest in a win over SICS. 

No. 2 singles Clayton English outlasted Henry Pudlo (7-5, 7-5) in Wednesday’s longest match. No. 1 singles Hugo Shinn swept his opponent (6-0, 6-0) and No. 1 doubles Devan and Derek Ye (6-1, 6-1) also won their match. 

PVCICS won the No. 2 doubles match through forfeit. 

Amherst 3, Ludlow 2 – Ludlow won both doubles matches, but the Hurricanes swept the singles to eke out a win over the Lions and improve to 4-2.  

No. 1 singles Miles Jeffries (6-0, 6-0) and No. 2 singles Woojin Kwan (6-2, 6-0) won both their matches and Elias Katsarose held on for a three-set win (6-4, 4-6, 6-3).  

Longmeadow 5, Belchertown 0 – No. 1 singles Trevor Weiss (1-6, 3-6) and the No. 1 doubles pair Luke Dudek and Tyler Burrows (3-6, 1-6) were able to win four games each over two sets.

Northampton 5, Agawam 0 – The Blue Devils stayed undefeated in a sweep against Agawam. 

The No. 1 doubles team of Kaz Sugihara and Oliver Levine won a three-set thriller against Egor Mikhaylov and Ruslan Bubuza (6-4, 3-6, 10-8). 

No. 1 singles Max Cahillane (6-2, 6-0), No. 2 singles Ethan Metz (6-2, 6-1) and No. 3 singles Maitreya Abend (6-3, 6-0) won their contests handily.

The No. 2 doubles pair of Emiliano Hidalgo and Jackson Briggs-Nye also won their match (6-1, 6-2).

Williston results

The Williston Northampton School boys ultimate team stayed perfect against Deerfield Academy on Wednesday, winning 15-10 to improve their record to 6-0.

Will Chalfant caught four goals and assisted on two and Alex Hall-Witt threw for five goals. 

- Girls lacrosse fell in a tight 8-6 loss to Westminster. 

- Boys lacrosse dropped a tight game to Wilbraham in overtime, falling 12-11. Joe Easton scored five goals and Joseph Kilcommons had three goals and an assist. Dan Ciejek made seven stops. 

 - Girls golf fell to both Loomis (0-5) and Ethel Walker (1.5-3.5). Mayphia Zhou earned Williston medalist honors with a 42 score. 

- Boys tennis earned a 4-3 win over Berkshire, while girls tennis fell 7-0 to Westminster.

- Maggie Fay allowed just two hits in a blowout 15-1 win for the Williston softball team. Jenna Guglielmi went 4-for-4 at the plate with seven RBIs and a home run. Monique Lyons also belted a home run for the Wildcats. 

- Williston baseball won its second game against Frederick Gunn 6-3 on Wednesday. Nolan Puglisi had two hits and three RBIs and also earned the win on the mound. Colin Larson got the save and hit a home run in the win. 

- Williston boys golf (212) fell to Deerfield (200) but bested both Wilbraham and Monson Academy (235). Eric Carter led the Wildcats wi th a 39.
