HS golf: Galen Fowles’ blistering 32 paces Northampton in opening win over South Hadley

Galen Fowles started off the fall golf season with a bang for Northampton. 

The junior shot a 32 to lead the Blue Devils to their first win of the season against South Hadley at the Ledges Golf Course. Northampton scored 19.5, while South Hadley finished with 4.5 points. 

Fowles bested Ryan MacGregor (38) in the No. 1 match; MacGregor tied for the second-best score of the day with Northampton’s Reilly Fowles with his 38 score. 

Northampton’s Jack Mattison-Gulotta shot a 40 to win his match while teammate Ben O’Connor (46) won his round against John Viola (51). Calvin Paddock (41) and Annalisa Aglaiti (49) rounded out the scoring for the Blue Devils. 

Belchertown 19 ½, Chicopee Comp 4 ½ – Belchertown’s Brady Perkins had a day on the links, shooting a team-best 38 to sweep his opponent 4 points to none, leading the Orioles to victory on Tuesday. 

The rest of Belchertown’s squad shot in the 40s. Henry Poissont finished with a score of 40 even, followed by Cal Orzech (42), Ben Anderson (43), Riley Breen (44) and Michael Murray (47). 

Hampshire 17,  Palmer 7 – The Raiders swept every position except No. 1 in the season opener at Quaboag Country Club. Pryden Messier (No. 5) and Camden Jarosz (No. 6) swept Charlie Wahlund and Hannah Hoang, respectively, 4-0.

No. 4 Nico Johnson bested Billy Partello 3½-½, while Brayden Fennessy prevailed 3-1 over Tyler Labonte at No. 2.

Owen Lech won a tight No. 3 match 2½-1½ against Lily White.

Palmer’s Ethan Beauchemin took medalist honors with a 33 and bested Levi Zielinski 4-0.

Turners Falls 21, Hopkins 3 – Taylor Barry was the lone Golden Hawk to shoot in the 40s in a loss to Turners Falls on Tuesday. 

Barry scored a 45 and notched half a point but dropped a close match against Turners Falls No. 1 Joey Mosca, who shot the lowest score of the day with a 43. No. 2 Christian Ciolkos shot a 51 for Hopkins, earning a point, and No. 3 Tyler St. Hilaire shot a 52 and scored a point and a half in the loss.
