High Schools: Zaikitis, Bailey combine on no-hitter for Hopkins Academy

Two Hopkins Academy pitchers combined for a no-hitter Tuesday, as the Golden Hawks softball team defeated Pope Francis 20-0 in five innings.

Kaelyn Zaikitis struck out six in three innings of work with one walk to earn the win, and Layni Bailey had one strikeout in two innings to finish the game.

Taylor Barry doubled and tripled among her four hits for the Golden Hawks.

Allison Markowski, Isabelle Palmisano and Sara Wright each singled three times. Sara Beauchamp and Jessica Markowski each had two hits.

Chicopee 17, Northampton 1 (5) — Leah Greene singled and drew a walk for the Blue Devils. Molly Allen scored a run.

Gateway 19, Amherst 0 (5) — Stephanie Paiva was 3-for-5 with a three-run homer and drove in five total runs for the Gators. Emma Bean-Barlow singled twice, and Olivia Dame hit a two-run triple. Nicole Hannigan struck out 11 in a one-hit shutout. She didn’t walk any.

Stephanie Barton singled for the Hurricanes.


Smith Academy 15, Mohawk 5 (5) — James Lavallee and Will Dobson (double) each went 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Falcons.

Ryan Belina doubled and drove in three runs.

Logan Graves (two RBIs) and Trey Kuzmeski (double) each were 2-for-4 for Smith Academy.

Michael Bassett struck out six and allowed just four hits to earn the win.

Granby 17, Sabis 0 (5) — Connor Asselin struck out three and ran the Rams’ shutout streak to four. He only allowed two walks and two hits.

Michael Toth homered and had three RBIs.

Raymond Toth and Nolan Sullivan each added three RBIs and a double.

Granby has won nine in a row to start the season.

Hopkins Academy 11, Turners Falls 0 (5) — Jack Feltovic struck out 12 in a two-hit shutout. He didn’t walk any. Jake Smith drove in three runs on three hits and scored twice. Braeden Tudryn (single), Kouji Ishida, Patrick Fitzgibbons (single) and Andrew Ciaglo (single) each had an RBI for Hopkins Academy.

Frontier 5, South Hadley 3 — Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth, the Redhawks rallied for a pair of runs that ultimately lifted them to a home win.

Jake Dodge singled to lead off the fourth inning, then eventually came around to score on a Shane Prusak bunt single that tied the game. Prusak eventually scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball to make it 4-3.

Frontier tacked on an insurance run in the sixth inning. Tyler Baranowski singled with two outs and came around on an RBI single from Kyle Barnes, who was a perfect 4-for-4 on the day to lead the offensive effort.

Baranowski got the win, striking out six and walking a pair in a complete game effort. South Hadley scored all three of its runs in the top of the second inning.

Palmer 8, Hampshire 4 — Colin Boyle, Tyler Galpin and Nick Quenneville each singled for the Raiders. Galpin struck out five in four innings on the mound.

Youth baseball

VFW 10, Delta Sand and Gravel 4 — Braiden Dion and Ryder Savage each singled twice for VFW on Monday. Ben Baker doubled.

Ronnie Bagdon had three hits and fell just a homer shy of the cycle for Sand and Gravel. Adam Paul and Patrick Beeltje each singled.
