NORTHAMPTON – You won’t find many high school teams in Massachusetts with more momentum at this point in the season than the Belchertown baseball team. The Orioles wrapped up their regular season with a 13-1 victory over Northampton on Wednesday, claiming their 11th consecutive win in decisive fashion.
Belchertown bashed 15 hits versus the Blue Devils, with five different batters registering two or more base knocks. Evan Ferguson tallied three hits as Belchertown’s top threat from the batter’s box in this one, but head coach Evan Berneche expressed confidence in his entire batting order following Wednesday’s win.
“From top to bottom, it’s guys executing, whether it’s small ball or whether it’s timely base hits from the bottom of the order,” Berneche said. “The top is going to hit, but in some of those bigger games against Pittsfield, some of the games against Agawam where they were really close games and we broke it open and the bottom of the lineup really came through for us, which is huge. Getting guys on with no outs, we bunt a lot and we do a lot of stuff like that, so really to run our offense it’s crucial to get guys on with no outs and we can kind of do a bunch of different stuff. Those games that we won that were bigger games, we’ve been able to do so.”
The Orioles — which last lost on April 16 to Pope Francis 14-1 – scored 14 combined runs in two victories against Agawam and seven runs against Pittsfield earlier in the win streak. Belchertown averaged 9.5 runs over its final 11 games and its top of the order, as evidenced during its win Wednesday, can put the bat on the ball with authority. The Orioles’ first four batters of Thatcher Rudnik, Jake Waller, Josh Misiaszek and Kamden Houle totaled nearly half (seven) of its hits against Northampton.
“We got multiple guys with 20-plus hits and then we got the bottom of the order, guys in the high teens [in hits] and guys that can execute bunts and squeezes and everybody on the team is expected to do it,” Berneche said. “We run bases really well, we pride ourselves on that and so I think it’s just a culmination of trying to do the things we do well and staying within ourselves.”
The Western Mass. tournament schedule has not been ironed out as of May 14, so it’s unclear when Belchertown’s next game will be. However, Berneche knows he can count on his leadership to keep the vibes high heading into the postseason.
“These guys are super close, they’ve been playing together forever,” Berneche said. “We got 10 seniors and at any given time we got eight seniors in the lineup and only two juniors because we use a [designated hitter]. We’re very senior-heavy and these guys have worked hard for four years now. This is my fifth year here and so it’s like a full cycle, we’re starting to see that all come through.”
The Blue Devils are on the opposite end of the spectrum. Northampton fell to 0-15 in the home defeat on Wednesday and struggled to put the ball in play. Only Matthew Baird, Ethan Kiresak and Xavier Nteta posted hits for the Blue Devils.

Northampton is less experienced than Belchertown and has multiple players who have bounced between the junior varsity and varsity ranks this season, according to varsity head coach Andrew Serio. Although they remained winless, Serio mentioned he’s seen improvement throughout the Blue Devils roster this season.
“I think as the season goes, that’s what you always hope as the coach, that in the start of the season to the end, did you see improvement? That’s the main goal from day-by-day,” Serio said. “I still see it going on as we go. I think there’s promise for next year. It’s not going to be back to square one. There’s going to be building that keeps on going.”
Serio has been around the Northampton program for five seasons. His second season as the varsity skipper is currently winding down after coaching JV the three seasons prior. While the results are still a work in progress, Serio knows his team’s inexperience will eventually work itself out in the seasons to come.
“Last year, we only had one senior and a lot of young guys,” Serio said. “Now, it’s like a buildup as the progression goes. We have six seniors this year and we have another bigger class as the juniors right now, so as the transition goes it looks like it’s getting better and better each year.”
The Blue Devils will have a chance to send their seniors off with ‘W’ in their final regular game of the season on Friday against Amherst Regional. The Hurricanes have not won since April 13.
“The thinking this week, big focus, is trying to help the seniors on their last, final week of the regular season, hopefully end on a high note,” Serio said. “Again, working together and building for next year and also finishing the season strong as possible [is the focus].”
