High Schools: Hampshire shines at fifth PVIAC alpine ski race

The fifth PVIAC alpine ski meet took place at Berkshire East Mountain Resort on Tuesday as area skiers competed in the slalom.

Billy Warren was one of four Hampshire skiers to finish in the top 11 during the boys varsity race. Warren came in second place in 46 seconds, then Coleton Duda was next, finishing in fifth place in 47.39 seconds.

Keller Mahoney of Northampton was right behind Warren, picking up third place in 46.90 seconds. Henry Fallon had the next fastest Blue Devils time, crossing the line in 59.60 seconds for 18th place.

James Scott (54.82) and Teddy Scott (55.72) took home 14th and 15th place for PVCICS, while Wes Dunford (1:07.44) and Max Thomson (1:14.09) were Amherst’s top finishers.

On the girls side, Hazel Scully-Henry was the fastest local skier, completing the course in 36.09 for 12th place for Hampshire. Teammate Brooke Hockenberry wasn’t far behind, posting a time of 36.71, which was good for 15th.

Sarah Fardal led PVCICS in 13th place with a time of 36.41, and was proceeded by Luo Yi Zhang, who grabbed 26th place in 40.60.

Northampton’s Simone Pagar (37.66) and Crystal Eichwald-Hoopes (40.30) did well for the Blue Devils.

Amelia Morse (38.83) and Anne Haugsjaahabink (39.99) were Amherst’s fastest performers.

Hampshire 80, Lee 78 – The Raiders picked up their third win in a row in the high-scoring affair.

Jack Wresien and Vynce Carr each had 20 points for Hampshire. Braylon Jarrett also surpassed double-digit points with 16 for the Raiders.

Smith Voc 61, PVCICS 57 – The Vikings and Dragons played another tightly contested game, needing overtime to decide a winner once again. Smith Voc won the first meeting, 68-60, in extra time back on Dec. 23.

Vikings’ Joshua Cole collected another double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds, while Jack Riley’s 21 points paced the winners.

“The press made the difference in the [fourth] quarter,” Smith Voc coach Akara Holder said via email. “We had not pressed [until] then.  We clawed back [and] Luis Delerme had steal [and] bucket that tied the game….then overtime.  We stayed with press and though they began to adjust, the pressure was too much…couple breakaways and shots on the line got us over the hump.”

PVCICS received 22 points from Lobsang Rabten and 16 from RJ Allen.

Girls basketball

South Hadley 53, Belchertown 37 — Despite scoring only four points in the first quarter and entering the second half tied with the Orioles, the Tigers overcame their slow start to defeat Belchertown on Monday night to pick up their 11th straight victory.

Cara Dean scored a game-high 15 points for South Hadley while Olivia Athas (9) and CC Gurek (6) combined for 15 points to lead a balanced offensive attack.

Belchertown received a team-high 14 points from Chloe LaRoche and 13 more from Morghan Litz in the loss.
