EASTHAMPTON — The Easthampton girls basketball team used a fast start to ease past Hopkins Academy, 54-27, Thursday night at home.
The Eagles outscored the Hawks 21-2 in the first quarter and never relinquished control en route to their eighth win of the season.
“We were doing things that we were working on like rebounding, and getting push and getting easy baskets in transition and things like that,” Easthampton head coach Brian Miller said. “Which then allows us to get into our 1-3-1 and different defenses that can create more turnovers and so things just kind of keep snowballing from there.”
Easthampton continued the good habits during the second quarter to build a 38-8 advantage going into the break.
Hopkins (3-8) began to hit more shots in the second half, with 19 combined points over the final 16 minutes, but couldn’t catch up to an Eagles squad that looked to be firing on all cylinders.
“It was one of those nights,” Hawks head coach Dick Coach said. “Our wins against Mahar and Greenfield, it was just the opposite, [we] were hitting from the outside. This game, you got to hand it to Easthampton, I mean they were hitting the 3s from the outside and they just had a complete game.”
Nola Roos netted 11 points to pace the Eagles, but eight other players had at least one basket for the hosts, highlighting the all-around strong performance from Easthampton.
“I mean it was good to see Shelby [Clark] hit two 3s, she doesn’t get a ton of playing time, so it was great to see her have the confidence to take those shots,” Miller said. “The girls, they work so hard in practice so you want to see them have success in the game.”

Clark’s six points trailed Veronica Rapoza (eight points) and Samone Young (seven) for top three among Eagles players.
Hopkins was led by Chloe Kosciusko’s 10 points, followed by Olivia Earle’s six points.
“Olivia Earle does a tremendous job running the point guard position, she’s a good outside shooter,” Coach said. “Morgan Augustin, she is our other outside shooter. [Earle] was on in the second half, but that first half, it was kind of a struggle for us.”
The Eagles have won six of their last seven and with playoffs approaching, Miller likes the look of his team.
“I think we’re getting better,” Miller said. “We still have work to do, but I think if you look at us from back in early December to now, there’s a big difference. Hopefully we can keep building on that and keep progressing.”
