High Schools: Amherst boys basketball falls to Longmeadow, 61-53

The Amherst boys basketball team received 38 combined points from Mitchell Carey and Samuel Woodruff, but couldn’t pull out the road victory in its 61-53 loss to Longmeadow on Tuesday night.
Carey scored a team-high 20 points for the Hurricanes, while Woodruff had 18 points.
Amherst kept it close against Longmeadow as it never trailed by more than four points at the end of any quarter.
Longmeadow was led by Daniel Wheeler with 18 points.
The Hurricanes move to 3-8 on the season.
Lee 62, Smith Academy 51 – A furious fourth-quarter comeback attempt fell short for the Falcons Tuesday night.
Smith Academy outscored Lee, 23-13, in the final frame, but dug itself too big a hole in the first half, trailing 34-18.
Garrett Willard had 25 points for the Falcons, followed behind by Jake Wilcox with 11 points.

Smith Academy has now lost three straight.
Smith Voc 69, St. Mary’s 47 – A double-double from Joshua Cole catapulted the Vikings to their eighth win of the year. Cole finished the night with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
Domeniq Sanchez slung in 24 points for Smith Voc, which was in control from the beginning. The Vikings were up by scores of 22-10 after one quarter and 36-28 at halftime.
Mahar 58, Frontier 55 — Max Millette led Frontier with 23 points, Alex Ellis scored 11 points, Rowan Modestow recorded 10 points while Carter Miller scored six points for the Redhawks in a loss in Orange Tuesday.
Northampton 103, Easthampton 67 – The Blue Devils had a strong performance in the pool, none more so than their 4x400 relay team, which took first place by more than a minute. Amalia Guerra, Inez Dole, Juliet Mitchell and Saumya Kulp combined for a time of 4:27.63. The Eagles’ earned second place in 5:30.00.
Easthampton’s Telyn Kelly and Kayleigh Hogan grabbed first and second place during the 200 individual medley.
Amherst 117, Palmer 60 – Sadie Cyr clinched a spot in Western Massachusetts Sectionals in the 50 free during Tuesday’s win. Cyr swam to a time of 27.23 seconds, helping the Hurricanes pick up their sixth victory in a row.
Northampton 24, Easthampton 10 – Cole Gulotta-Mattison took first in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:12.02 for the Blue Devils, while Max Kruger won the 100-yard freestyle in 1:17.22 for the Eagles.
Palmer 108, Amherst 60 – The Hurricanes’ 4x400 free relay team of Lewin Halasz, Rhys Prindle, Soren Castenson and Joe Hazlip qualified for Sectionals in the loss. The foursome finished in a time of 4:05.54.
Girls basketball
Smith Academy 62, St. Mary’s 31 —
The Smith Academy girls basketball team wasted no time getting into a groove offensively against St. Mary’s on Monday.
The Falcons led 15-8 after one and quickly turned that into a 38-17 lead at the intermission. Smith Academy didn’t allow the Saints to get back in the game in the final 16 minutes, as the Falcons went on to earn a 62-31 victory in Westfield.
Alexa Jagodzinski led the way with 20 points, Anna Scagel scored 12 points while Caitlin Graves and Jane Lavallee each added eight points in the win.
Lee 53, Granby 27 — Kalli White scored 14 points while Brenna Moreno added 12 points in the Rams’ loss to the Wildcats on Monday.
Frontier 58, Palmer 27 — Addie Harrington, Skyler Steele, Harper Modestow and Claire Kirkendall each recorded 10 points for the Redhawks, who got back in the win column with a victory over the Panthers on Monday in Palmer.
Olivia Machon added eight points in the win.
South Hadley 50, Wahconah 37 — Kate Phillips’ 13 points helped the Tigers earn a victory in Dalton on Monday.
Olivia Athas scored 12 points while Caitlin Dean and Cara Dean each tallied six points for South Hadley.
Boys basketball
Frontier 54, Ludlow 46 — Max Millette led the way with 20 points in the Redhawks’ triumph over the Lions at Goodnow Gymnasium on Monday.
Frontier trailed 27-24 at the half before outscoring Ludlow 15-6 in the third and 15-13 in the fourth.
Ty Skroski tossed in 15 points while Rowan Modestow and Garrett Dredge each added five points in the win.
Boys basketball
Holyoke 56, Amherst 54 (OT) — The ’Canes gave the Purple Knights a scare last Friday night, but Holyoke remained unbeaten against Hampshire County teams and avenged its first loss of the year (suffered on Thursday) behind 18 points from Aden Cabrera.
Calvin Godbolt added 14 points for the Knights while Amherst’s Mitchell Carey (17 points) and Samuel Woodruff (11 points) played well for the ‘Canes.
Girls basketball
South Hadley 50, Wahconah 37 — Olivia Athas (12) and Kate Phillips (11) combined for 23 points to lift the Tigers to a win over Wahconah on Friday night, sweeping the season series with the Warriors and improving to 10-1.
Cara Dean and Caitlin Dean each scored six points while Taylor Bullough chipped in five for South Hadley.
