HATFIELD – The Smith Voc baseball team left no doubt in its 15-1 victory over Smith Academy on Friday.

The Vikings poured in eight runs during the top of the fifth inning, which added to their already hefty 7-1 advantage, ending the contest early due to the mercy rule. Smith Voc moved to 6-0 with the win, while the Falcons fell to 1-4.

“[Thursday] we had a great game against St. Mary’s, who beat our two rivals Westfield and Pathfinder. I thought maybe we’d come in a little bit [tired] but they were excited. A lot these guys know [Smith Academy’s] players, so it was just a fun game all in all,” Vikings head coach Luis Bonilla said.

Pat Millin and Kaleb Jorritsma belted two hits each for Smith Voc, which finished with seven altogether. Jared Baer, Gavin Kukucka, Logan Brothers and Josh Cole all drove in two runs for the Vikings.

“Pat Millin our catcher, he’s been hitting the ball hard,” Bonilla said. “A couple guys got their first hits. Our second baseman Lucas [Lussier] got his first varsity hit, he’s a freshman. Lot a firsts for a lot of these guys. Josh Cole played the whole game, got his second hit. He’s a first-time varsity player, hasn’t played baseball in years.”

Millin, Cole and Baer each earned an extra-base hit (double) versus Smith Academy.

On the mound, Jorritsma threw all five innings and surrendered just three hits while striking out six and walking two Falcons batters.

Smith Academy’s Owen Belden (run scored) and Jake Wilcox had two of its three hits on the afternoon. Starting pitcher Callan Payne took the loss, giving up three hits, seven runs (one earned), but struck out five and walked four Vikings batters in two innings.
