HADLEY — A head-on collision occurred on River Drive shortly after 7 a.m. this morning injuring four people.

The crash between a pick-up truck and a Toyota Matrix occurred near 349 River Drive, according to Hadley Police dispatcher Lauren Triggs. River Drive was temporarily shut down at Shattuck Road, but has since been reopened to traffic.

“It was a bad accident,” said Detective Jesse Green, noting that the injuries did not seem too serious at the scene. Six people were involved, four in a Ford F-150 and two in the Matrix, Green reported. Two of the occupants of each vehicle, four in total, were transported to Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton. Their injuries did not appear to be life threatening, Green said.

River Drive has a slight S-curve at the location where the crash occurred. “We have two witnesses saying the Toyota Matrix, which was traveling southbound, crossed over the yellow line and collided with the truck, which was traveling northbound,” Green said. He added that the driver of the Matrix may have failed to negotiate the road’s curve.

The accident is under investigation and there is a possibility that charges and/or citations will be issued to the operator of the Matrix, according to Green.
