AMHERST — A hazmat team was called to the scene of a police investigation at Colonial Village apartments that prompted the evacuation of tenants on Tuesday.

According to Amherst Police, at 4:31 p.m. police were called to Colonial Village for a wellness check on a mother and her young child in an apartment. At the scene, police say officers observed evidence of potentially hazardous materials related to illicit drug use.

The building was then evacuated and the Amherst Fire Department and the District 4 Hazardous Response team were brought in to assist with the investigation.

“We were there to support them (the police),” said Amherst Fire Chief Tim Nelson.

At 12:19 a.m. a search warrant was executed in the apartment related to the manufacture of illegal narcotics. Residents were let back into the building at about 2:15 a.m. According to police, there were no injuries or property damage.

Police say the matter is still under investigation.
