WESTHAMPTON — Plenty of Hannah Wodecki’s home runs have cleared the fence at Hampshire Regional’s softball field.

The junior had to work for her latest one against Hoosac Valley in Monday’s Western Massachusetts Division 2 softball quarterfinals.

Wodecki was up with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning and Theresa Saltis on third. She took a pitch out to center field, and it dropped between two Hurricanes outfielders. As Wodecki rounded second, she didn’t get a clear sign from Raiders coach Brian McGan.

“He wasn’t looking at me, so I looked back and I kept running, then I got to third,” she said. “He said ‘go home.’ And I went ‘OK,’ kept running. Slid into home, great finish.”

The inside the park homer, Wodecki’s fourth round-tripper of the year, put a bow on No. 1 Hampshire’s 7-2 victory over the ninth-seeded Hurricanes. The Raiders will host No. 5 Easthampton in the semifinals Wednesday.

“At this point of the year, it’s how you survive,” McGan said. “It doesn’t matter how you do it as long as you get the ‘W’ on top of it.”

The Raiders scored five runs in the first three innings before flattening out.

Katelyn Baker led off the bottom of the first with a single then stole second. After two fly outs, Hampshire pitcher Jocleyn Mettey drove her in with an RBI single.

In the second, Katelyn Labrie got Hampshire going with a one-out double. Hailey Wodecki and Saltis followed with back-to-back RBI doubles that pushed the score to 3-0. A Baker ground out moved Saltis to third, and she scored the Raiders’ fourth run on a passed ball.

Labrie and Wodecki collaborated on Hampshire’s fifth run, too. Ashley Cortis was hit with a pitch on the leg with two outs, then Labrie singled. Wodecki’s second RBI double gave Hampshire a 5-0 lead.

“We kept working off each other, hitting off each other,” Hailey Wodecki said.

Madi Puppolo put the Hurricanes on the board in the fourth with a one-out solo homer. She had two of Hoosac Valley’s three hits: that blast to left-center and a double down the line in the first. In between, Mettey sat down eight consecutive batters. The only other hit she allowed was a Rylie Bishop solo shot in the seventh. Mettey struck out nine and didn’t allow a walk.

“Solo home runs aren’t going to hurt you. Sometimes they catch it, but it’s just one run,” McGan said. “Those are the things you’ve got to shake off and move on.”

Hampshire moved on to the sectional semifinals for the 13th consecutive tournament. The Raiders have reached this point every edition since 2008.
