WESTHAMPTON — Jacob Sicard made quick work of No. 39 Roxbury Prep in the top of the first inning, and after Zach Phakos smashed a two-run home run in the bottom half of the frame, the party was on in Westhampton.

Sicard fanned 13 Wolves batters and only walked one, as the No. 26 Hampshire Regional senior threw a no-hitter in the Raiders’ 13-0, five-inning MIAA Division 4 preliminary round victory on Friday afternoon. Only two outs – a ground out back to the mound and a fly out to center – came from something other than a Sicard strikeout. He sat down nine of the last 10 Wolves batters with a K, stamping his sensational performance on the mound.

Hampshire heads to No. 7 East Bridgewater on Monday at 4:15 p.m. for the Round of 32.

“We’ve never hosted a tournament game in this new format, so that was exciting,” Hampshire head coach Mark Baldwin said. “We went with our best pitcher, and he threw a no-hitter. So, yay for him. He was dominant.”

Knowing Sicard was on his game, it immediately settled the Hampshire offense. Baldwin admitted the Raiders have been struggling from the plate as of late, but they came alive on Friday.

Riley Florek doubled to start the first inning, and two batters later Phakos ripped his home run well over the left-field fence. Sicard then laced a double of his own followed by a Phil Morin two-bagger that brought him in. Morin came around to score on a passed ball to make it 4-0 Hampshire through one.

Two frames later, the hosts put up another crooked number. Morin started the inning with a walk and Hogan followed suit. Thomas Moore smacked a double to plate them both, then Joe Breguet (walk) and Wesley Thompson (single) got on board and came around to score. It was 9-0 Raiders after three innings.

“Especially at the plate, if you know you don’t have to score because your pitcher is throwing well, then you do score – that’s just how that works,” Baldwin said. “When you’re on edge and everyone is pressing, it makes it difficult. Jacob calmed everyone down, and we strung some hits together. That was nice to see.”

Phakos’ moon shot certainly helped give Hampshire some early momentum as well.

“He’s our best hitter,” Baldwin said, “so when he puts a good swing on the ball, that just gets everyone fired up. Who doesn’t want to hit a home run in their last home game? That was awesome.”

Four more runs in the fourth inning had Hampshire in front 13-0, meaning if the Raiders held Roxbury Prep scoreless in the fifth the game would be over. Sicard struck out the side to end his day in style.

Morin finished 2-for-2 with three runs scored, Sicard and Moore each drove in a pair, Vynce Carr ripped an RBI triple while Thompson also drove in two runs with a single. The Raiders tallied six extra-base hits in the victory.

“This gives us some momentum,” Baldwin said of Friday’s win. “Our defense has been really good the last 13 games or so. We only have nine errors over that stretch. We don’t make dumb plays. We’re playing well, and it is a good time for it.”

Colin Hogan will get the start on the mound for Hampshire in Monday’s Round of 32 contest with East Bridgewater.

No. 33 Minuteman 4, No. 32 Smith Vocational 0 — The Vikings received 15 strikeouts on the bump from ace James Lavallee, but their bats could never get going as Minuteman held them to just three hits in a tightly-contested Division 4 preliminary round matchup on Friday afternoon at Arcanum Field.

Jared Baer, Gavin Kukucka and Brayden Kukucka tallied the Smith Voc hits, while Pat Millin, Kaleb Jorritsma and Brayden Kukucka each drew walks in the loss. Two of Lavallee’s four runs surrendered were not earned as Smith Voc made two errors in the field.

Minuteman scored two runs in the seventh to double its 2-0 lead.

No. 28 Belchertown 2, No. 37 Bedford 1 — All three runs from Friday were scored in the fourth inning, as Bedford jumped ahead 1-0 in the top of the frame before Jake Waller and Canyon Charron ripped RBI singles in the bottom half for the Orioles to go ahead 2-1. Josh Misiaszek took it from there, as he shut down Bedford on the mound – hurling a no-hitter with just three walks on eight strikeouts in seven innings.

The lone Bedford run was unearned, as they reached on an error and came around to score on another Belchertown miscue. Ian McDonald, Misiaszek, Kamden Houle, Ryan Gould and Evan Ferguson all added hits on top of Waller and Charron.
