HADLEY — Hampshire Mall’s interior corridors and the parking lot outside JC Penney were a flurry of activity Wednesday as scenes were shot for a feature film written and directed by Amherst Regional High School graduate Annie Baker.

Several members of the film crew for the movie titled “Janet Planet” could be seen inside and outside the mall, with various yellow signs pointing to the green room, the catering area and the two sets being used for the production.

Inside the mall, an area was made to look like a bookstore, while in the parking lot 1990s-era cars could be seen parked, including one that was pulled up alongside the side entrance to JC Penney.

Other signs, all with the initials JP on them, read “base camp” and “crew parking,” while people in yellow vests could be seen monitoring the lot, with orange cones blocking off access to vehicles, though PVTA buses were allowed to pass by.

Signs indicated that the two mall sets were being used for filming scenes 18 through 21.

A description online says the movie “follows 11-year-old Lacy, her mother Janet, and the three people who come into their lives over one summer in 1991.”

Additional scenes are being shot in Hadley and in Amherst later this month, while at least one home in Leverett is being used for other filming.
