Photo Gallery: Ride on

Twelve years ago this month, I fell in with this gang. No need to carry on here but, suffice to say, it's a treasure to know these guys.

It started out as a photo page on a loosely organized but tightly knit group of a dozen or so cyclists — all neighbors, fathers and friends — that met several times a week to ride, mostly in the early morning as in this recent photo.

Soon it became apparent that I needed to do a ride-along (literally) to get the pictures that I just couldn’t get from the side of the road or the passenger seat of my car. But it had been so long since I’d ridden regularly (college, basically) that I asked my wife to drop me off halfway through their route, as I wasn’t sure I could keep up on the whole 12 miles (!). And I forgot my helmet, as I recall. An amateur mistake.

But it all worked out, and before long, they encouraged me to join their group. Of course, I agreed — even though I hadn’t ridden in 20 years and I would be the only non-father. Within a few months, I was riding 25 to 60 miles a week, no sweat, and found out to boot that I was going to be a father.

So, extending that logic, I guess what I’m wondering is, are there any millionaires out there that would like me to join their club? (Though I already feel like a millionaire.)
