Please support the Daily Hampshire Gazette’s COVID-19 coverage

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought the local economy — and many of the advertisers who support our work — to a near standstill. During this unprecedented challenge, we continue to make our coronavirus coverage free to everyone at gazettenet.com because we feel our most critical mission is to deliver vital information to our communities. If you believe local news is essential, especially during this crisis, please donate.

Thank you for your support of the Gazette.

More often than not the photos in these weekly galleries do not include people. The images rarely hinge on someone’s actions — that would be a recipe better suited to the pages of the daily edition. But after I noticed these “sunspot” reflections created by a series of windows on the opposing side of Division Street in Holyoke last week, I felt like the barren sidewalk below them just seemed too stark. Nothing at all like the afternoon bustle on High Street just a few feet away.

Ironically, I had to wait quite a while for anyone to amble down that side of the street.

Afterwards, when I caught up to these two folks and introduced myself, they asked why I was taking pictures. While I was trying to explain about the reflections, I also showed them the photo. That worked much better.

They immediately liked the picture, but also said they didn’t want their names used. So, in a double-reverse logic kind of way, that bounced the image back to being about the composition and not the people, as I had first seen it.
