NORTHAMPTON — The Hampshire County Jail and House of Correction received a perfect score on its most recent reaccreditation by the American Correctional Association.

The accreditation is a voluntary program that requires the facility to maintain both mandatory and nonmandatory standards. The facility was audited in May by three correctional professionals from Illinois, Louisiana and Washington.

The accreditation is “intended to improve facility operations through adherence to clear standards relevant to all areas/operations of the facility, including safety, security, order, inmate care, programs, justice, and administration,” according to the association.

The review covers every part of the facility including environmental conditions, the medical and sanitation, fire safety and food, Hampshire County Sheriff Patrick Cahillane explained.

This is the ninth time the jail has been accredited by the American Correctional Association. The jail began this accreditation in 1990 under then Sheriff Robert J. Garvey.

“Even though we are audited by many state agencies, this is a national commission that comes in and they analyze everything that we do and make sure we are meeting a criteria,” Cahillane said. “I think that is important and it motivates the staff to be on their toes at all times when they are working.”

Audits occur every three years. The jail is one of 44 facilities throughout the state that are accredited through the association.

Cahillane said he believes the accreditation shows there is a required level of treatment and overall standards that improves the living conditions for prisoners and makes their rehabilitation standards better.

“We know we are not perfect,” Cahillane said. “We try to be but we know we aren’t perfect.”
