HADLEY — A family on Crystal Lane is asking for the return of their children’s playhouse after it was taken from their driveway on Saturday evening by a man and woman who may have thought it was free, according to police.

Lt. Mitchell Kuc said police are working to identify two people captured on the family’s home surveillance video loading the playhouse into a pickup truck. Police are not investigating the incident as a crime.

“The playhouse was directly at the end of the driveway,” Kuc said, and “most people presume” that items left there or on a curb are free for the public. “I can’t say why it was placed there by the residents.”

When the family noticed the playhouse was missing, they reviewed the video and saw that a man and woman had lifted the playhouse into the bed of their white pickup truck, Kuc said; they had a young child with them, and they “looked up toward the house on a number of occasions,” apparently to see if anyone was home.

“We don’t believe that there was any ill intent behind it,” Kuc said.

In a weekend Facebook post, police described the item as an “expensive cedar playhouse” and shared a photo of the truck with the playhouse in its bed.

The post had been shared more than 250 times by Monday, a significant public response for the department’s page. One commenter marveled that the playhouse looked heavy, but Kuc said it did not seem to be.

“It didn’t really take them that long,” Kuc said. “This couple were able to lift it in, what appeared to be fairly easily.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Hadley police and speak with Officer Janelle Seitz.
