HADLEY — A professional recruiting company will be hired to assist officials in finding Hadley’s next town administrator.

The Select Board voted 4-1 Wednesday, with John Waskiewicz voting against the motion, to hire Municipal Resources Inc. of Meredith, New Hampshire, as the search firm to find a successor to David Nixon.

In January, Nixon announced he would be leaving the position at the end of this year after more than 15 years serving Hadley.

The cost to hire the company is expected to be around $10,000, and most board members said it is appropriate to have professional help.

“It really opens up the pool of candidates,” Board Chairman Christian Stanley said.

The company would be responsible for posting the job, describing requirements of the position and locating people who might be interested.

Nixon and Human Resources Director Edward O’Connor will arrange a contract with Municipal Resources.

Board member Molly Keegan said that the town administrator is the most significant position in Hadley government and that investing in the search process is worthwhile.

“Making the wrong hire is going to cost us a lot more than that,” Keegan said.

Nixon said three main companies are used by cities and towns in Massachusetts to recruit town administrators and city managers, the others being Community Paradigm Associates of Plymouth and the Collins Center at the University of Massachusetts-Boston. But Nixon said Municipal Resources, which handles work for smaller communities, would likely be the best fit for Hadley.
