HADLEY — A Jersey Mike’s Subs shop could be coming to a Route 9 shopping plaza.

The Planning Board Tuesday agreed to waive additional site plan review for a change in use proposed at the 355 Russell St. strip mall to accommodate the restaurant, which would replace a Sport Clips Haircuts that opened in 2020, focused on haircuts for men and boys and recently closed.

The small plaza, in front of the larger Mountain Farms Mall, is anchored by an LL Bean store, and also includes a Five Guys Burgers and Fries, an AT&T store and a 110 Grill restaurant.

Tony Cubr, who with his son are working toward opening the Jersey Mike’s franchise, will have to come back before planners for approvals of the signs for the store, possibly at the board’s Sept. 17 meeting. Signs will be limited to 40 square feet, because the storefront is part of a multi-tenant property, and they also can’t be internally illuminated.

The change in use approval allows the Cubrs to begin working with a contractor on Oct. 1, when they can access the property, Cubr said.

The Jersey Mike’s would be the first in the region, with the current closest locations of the national chain in Longmeadow and Gardner, with another being planned for Palmer.

EV charging stations OK’d

Planners also approved new Lynkwell brand electric vehicle charging stations that will be placed in the northwest corner of the parking lot at the Central Rock Gym, 165 Russell St.

The two direct current fast chargers will each have four ports, meaning four vehicles at a time can be charged.

Lynn Stewart, assistant project manager for Livingston Energy Group in Schenectady, New York, said the chargers, with informational signs, will take up about 276 square feet of parking, leaving the parking lot for the climbing gym with 31,884 square feet of space for customers. That is well over the zoning rules in town that requires twice as much parking as commercial area.

Other signs approved include revised temporary signs for the Balise Subaru at 299 Russell St. and 305 Russell St.

“Simple, and no illumination is proposed for this one,” attorney Tom Reidy said.

The signs are need as the dealership is rebuilt and transitions from Steve Lewis Subaru.
