HS tennis: Stefan Johnson, Aidan O’Brien, James Serhant reach WMass Individual Tournament quarterfinals

Northampton sophomore Stefan Johnson and junior Aidan O’Brien, and Amherst Regional sophomore James Serhant reached the quarterfinals of the Western Massachusetts Individual Tennis Tournament over the weekend in Longmeadow.

Johnson, the top overall boys seed, swept Central’s Keegan Lebeau 6-0, 6-0 in the opening round and won 6-0, 6-0 against Nate Roberts of Chicopee in the second round. He’s matched up with Longmeadow’s James Foster, the No. 9 seed, in the quarterfinals at 10 a.m. Saturday in Longmeadow.

The tournament continues with the finals Sunday.

Serhant beat Chicopee’s Max Piecos 6-0, 6-0 in the opening round and dropped just one game against Central’s Hanson Hoang (6-0, 6-1) in Round 2. He will face O’Brien, the sixth seed, at 10 a.m. Saturday.

O’Brien had a first-round bye after a scratch then took down Lee’s Cooper Maloney 6-0, 6-1 in the second round. Maloney beat Josh Tab of Belchertown 3-6, 7-6, 6-0 in the opening round.

Amherst’s Aengus Cox reached the second round after upsetting No. 8 seed 6-2, 6-1. He lost to Foster in Round 2.

Austin Xiong also made the second round for the Hurricanes after a scratch, but he lost 6-1, 6-0 against East Longmeadow’s Anh Nyugen in the second round.

Ben Schrenzel of Belchertown lost to Longmeadow’s Ashvin Babu, the fifth seed, 6-2, 6-1. The Orioles’ Maxim Caron lost 6-2, 6-0 against the No. 2 seed, Konas Kollias of Longmeadow.

Northampton’s Pierre Venne lost in the first round 6-2, 7-6 against Pittsfield’s Cole Masiero.

No area players reached the girls tournament quarterfinals. Amherst’s Rebkah Hong got to the third round after beating Pittsfield’s Hannah Masiero 6-3, 6-0 following a first-round bye. She lost 6-1, 6-1 against Mia Van Deurezen from Monument Mountain in Round 3. Van Deurezen bested Frontier Regional’s Mary Laurens 6-2, 6-3 in the first round.

The Hurricanes’ Sofia Sotarello dropped a 6-1, 6-1 second-round match against Ludlow’s Rebecca Hall. They both had byes in the first round.

Tori Speth of Frontier lost 6-3, 6-2 to Westfield’s Brianna Shevetsov in the opening round.

The doubles tournament was postponed Sunday due to rain. It will start Saturday morning at Longmeadow.
