HS cross country: Northampton sweeps Hampshire Regional to open season

The Northampton cross country program opened the season with a sweep of Hampshire Regional in Westhampton on Tuesday.

The Blue Devils won the girls meet, 18-45, while Hamp won the boys meet, 15-45.

Maggie Reade was first and Abby Andrews was second for Northampton in the girls meet.

Reade finished the 2.9-mile course in 20 minutes, 55 seconds while Andrews crossed in 20:56. Northampton took the seven of the top eight positions. Adele Jordan was fourth (21:03) and Lily Shimpach was fifth (21:06).

Sylvie Mahon-Moore was third in 21:00 for the Raiders.

The Blue Devils swept the top five places in the boys meet.

Jonathan Lischetti was first, while Lars Sippel was second. Both finished in 16:53.

Max Schneider was third (17:06), Tor Olsson was fourth (17:07) and Riley Cole fifth (17:09).

Jeff Fish finished sixth and Jadyn Kopie was eighth for the Raiders.

Boys cross country

Amherst Regional 15, Belchertown 44 — Ryan and Kyle Yanko led a top-five sweep as the Hurricanes won at Foley Field in Belchertown.

Ryan Yanko covered the 2.9-mile course in 16:49. Kyle Yanko was right behind in 17:23.

Evan Harrington was sixth in 18:25 for the Orioles.

PVCICS 19, Westfield Tech 41 — Odin Moore (17:41) and Hunter Palm (18:47) finished first and second, respectively, for visiting PVCICS.

Gateway Regional 28, Easthampton 29 — Eli Gilbert finished 11th and broke the tie as the Gators won at Nonotuck Park.

Dave Vasilchenko finished the 2.99-mile course in a record 19:43 for Gateway.

Patrick Millin was third (21:23), while Dan McKellick was fourth (21:27).

Jessie Balboni (ninth, 26:47) and Sean Fogue (10th, 28:15) broke into the top 10.

Gianni Soucy was second in 20:23 to pace the Eagles.

Leverett Horrigan was fifth in 21:44, while Jonah Slaghekke (23:07), Zak Oulbeid (24:41) and James Aquino (26:01) were sixth, seventh and eighth.

Frontier Regional 15, Athol 50 — The Red Hawks took the top four and eight of the top 10 as they won at Bearsden Forest Conservation Area in Athol.

Dan Fellows was first on the 2.76-mile course in 19:22.

Aleks Carey (20:35), Aden Gray (21:34) and Amory Maxey (22:10) followed, respectively.

Girls cross country

Easthampton 24, Gateway Regional 31 — Brooke Bongiovanni was second (24:30) and Waverly Kane-Long followed behind in third (26:13) as the Eagles edged the Gators at home. Amelie Fisher was fifth in 26:19 for Easthampton.

Alexandra Henrichon, of Gateway, was first in 23:59 on the 2.99-mile course at Nonotuck Park. Sawyer Wilkinson was fourth in 26:18.

Amherst Regional 15, Belchertown 50 — The Hurricanes swept the top eight en route to a win at Foley Field in Belchertown.

Charlotte Staudenmayer was first in 19:45 on the 2.9-mile course. Maddie Shea (20:38), Vivian Jacobs-Townsley (21:03), Annalise Peterson (21:41) and Jana Murphy (23:01) followed, respectively.

Natalie Shaw was ninth for Belchertown in 24:18. Molly Bail was 12th (25:13).

Frontier Regional 15, Athol 50 — The Red Hawks swept the top 10 en route to the win at Bearsden Forest Conservation Area in Athol.

Angelina Egland won for the second time this season, covering the 2.76-mile course in 22:53. She was followed by Leah Gump (24:13), Olivia Deane (25:05), Abigail Howard (25:06) and Ayla Starr (25:11).

PVCICS 18, Westfield Tech 41 — Arden Clark Degrenier (24:44) and Ava Crowley (26:02) finished first and second, respectively, for visiting PVCICS.
