HADLEY — When the Hopkins and Northampton softball teams met earlier this season, the Golden Hawks handled the Blue Devils with ease – winning 15-2 back on April 9. But on Monday, the two sides matched up a second time and Northampton more than held its own.
The Blue Devils trailed just 2-0 through four innings, but a three-run fifth gave Hopkins ace Cassandra Dion plenty of cushion the rest of the way. Dion struck out 10, allowed just four hits and one walk and pitched all seven innings in yet another strong outing in the circle, leading the Golden Hawks to a 5-0 win to extend their winning streak to nine.
Isabella Bramucci and Olivia Earle had one hit apiece and each drove in runs for Hopkins, Alayna Bailey ripped an RBI double and Allison Skwisz tallied a single as well. The Golden Hawks capitalized on five Northampton errors to score timely runs. Lilly Ellia, Dion, Alayna Bailey, Bramucci and Skwisz scored the runs.
On Northampton’s side, Greta Lepore continued her solid season pitching for the Blue Devils despite only being in eighth grade. All five runs Lepore surrendered were unearned, and she struck out five while walking just two. Offensively, Northampton was led by Lily Pelis’ two hits, Sasha Rodriguez and Haly Doucette-Kaplan each recorded singles while Jayda Alejandro earned a walk.
Hopkins (10-2) has two more games this week and looks to increase its winning streak to double digits. Northampton (4-6) next travels to Greenfield on Friday.
Hampshire 13, Easthampton 0 (5) — Kalin Dubay and Rachel Hickox tied for a team-high two hits each, with Hickox driving in three runs and Dubay bringing home two. CC Thayer added an RBI triple while Chelsea Vanasse and Mariah Pacinella tallied two RBIs apiece.
Ryanne Dubay (three innings, five strikeouts) and Hickox (two innings, two strikeouts, one walk) combined for a no-hitter in the circle for the Raiders, which improved to a flawless 11-0 with the win.
Madison Urban (walk) was the lone Eagles base runner, and Summer Routhier fanned six Hampshire batters in her five innings pitched.
