I’ve been involved in municipal government for over 50 years. During that time, I was a volunteer fireman for over 20 years; a member of the Finance Committee; a Select Board member for three terms as well as school transportation coordinator for 25 years. I have also been involved in numerous town activities.

With this long history of experience, I think I can speak about what makes the town of Hadley one of the most enviable places to live in western Massachusetts, with some authority.

What I’m about to pen in this letter has nothing to do with me. I am writing to you to help me in asking the present Select Board to consider naming the next Town Report after this individual.

When we served on the Select Board, which was only three members and a part-time secretary at the time, you had to put in the time and work necessary to achieve a positive goal for our beloved town.

During all of my time in community affairs, I never worked with an individual who performed his duties in a diligent manner harder than myself until I started to work along side of John Mieczkowski Sr.

There were many times we found ourselves on different roads but always coming to a mutual agreement as to the best way for the town to proceed in that particular situation.

During the time John Mieczkowski served his community, you either loved him or hated him! I’ve never worked with someone who was so well prepared to speak on the subject matter at hand. You may not have liked what he said, but in his heart, he forged ahead in the way he felt it best served the community.

While serving Hadley, John certainly helped to sell a lot of newspapers; there’s no question about that!

Let me list a few things John has done for the town of Hadley and its inhabitants.

Starting out in the Fire Department in which he served for over 40 years. He saved lives and rescued people on the water throughout our area by starting the Hadley Dive Team. He served on the Select Board, Sewer Commission and finally on the Planning Board. He saved the town millions of dollars, using his expertise in construction principals and business knowledge.

Serving in municipal government can be very demanding and it can at times take away from your personal life.

John has dedicated the past few years to his family and caring for his wife Nancy, who recently passed away. Yes, I am one of the individuals in town who admire him for the person he is and his accomplishments for the good of Hadley.

If you agree with my endeavor to have the Town Report named in John’s honor, please call a Select Board member or drop a note in the mail in support of this request.

I thank you in advance for any support in this quest.

Yours in good government.

Donald J. Pipczynski is a former Hadley Select Board member.
