GREENFIELD — The town has received a $41,421 grant to explore the possibility of regionalizing all public safety communication in Franklin County.

In May, the town applied for a competitive State 911 Development Grant to perform a feasibility study to determine whether all public safety communications in the county could be performed by one regional center serving all communities.

“This is in keeping with the commonwealth’s stated goal of reducing 911 (public safety answering point) locations through the regionalization of communication centers,” Greenfield Police Chief Robert Haigh Jr. said in a news release.

All towns in Franklin County except for Greenfield and Montague currently receive dispatching services from Shelburne Control, which is funded through both State 911 and State Police budgets and hosted by the State Police in its barracks on the Mohawk Trail.

Haigh previously said there are often delays in getting information out to departments across the county because of the fractured nature of the current system.

“The application focus was to prepare a viable proposal to bring the services of all three under one roof to improve public safety services,” he said. “With the desire for a consolidated public safety complex being sought in the town of Greenfield, the opportunity to include a state of the art, modern day communication center for the entire county was included in the thought process.”

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, which currently uses Shelburne Control for some of its operations, would also be served by the center. It expressed written support for the grant, as did several other municipalities throughout the county.

Haigh said the town is looking forward to working with a consultant who will provide a roadmap for future public safety services.
