The Granby School Committee took a tentative step Wednesday with a patient eye toward the future, approving basketball skills and drills to begin Jan. 19.

They left the door open to potentially play games at the beginning of February if COVID-19 numbers go down.

Granby students traditionally play hockey and swim for South Hadley under a co-op agreement. The school committee approved that for this winter.

South Hadley unanimously approved all winter sports in mid-December. The Tigers delayed the start of sports until Jan. 25 rather than Monday, when the PVIAC is allowing practice to begin. South Hadley beginning sports is subject to School Committee approval Jan. 21.

PVIAC games won’t begin until Jan. 21.

In the Pioneer Valley, Belchertown, Easthampton, Hampshire Regional, Northampton and Smith Vocational have also approved basketball for skills and drills.

Smith Academy is not sponsoring winter sports at all.

The schools that offer them have approved alpine and nordic skiing as well as swimming and diving, which will compete in virtual meets.
