GRANBY — GoNetspeed, a longtime internet and cellphone provider in Granby, recently wrapped up a $2.4 million project that will enable it to offer more than 2,200 homes and businesses high-speed fiber-optic internet service with faster upload and download speeds.

“Timing is everything and for us it became a great time to make this investment,” said David Allen, GoNetspeed’s senior vice president of network operations. “We’re pretty excited by the response we’ve seen from the community and investors, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to make this happen.”

After a six-month period of planning and installation, GoNetspeed offers Granby residents three internet plans, from the slowest option at 500 megabits per second to the fastest option of 2 gigabits. The service is available now for any residents, and pricing for exact plans is available on the company’s website.

“Granby is unique because we’ve had a presence there for a long time,” Allen said. “Other communities it takes three-plus years just to gain access and begin construction.”

Granby’s partnership with GoNetspeed began in the early 2000s when the internet provider bought the Granby Telephone and Telegraph Co. of Mass. Installing the fiber-optic cable was extra efficient, Allen said, since the company already had wire cables on the poles.

Fiber-optic internet doesn’t rely on electrical signals sent along metal wires like traditional cable internet. Instead, data travels as light pulses through glass fibers, keeping internet connection consistent and reliable.

“Customers can upload just as fast as you can download, and you can imagine nowadays that’s so much more important,” Allen said. “You don’t want to be waiting for videos or photos on your phone or a TikTok to upload.”

GoNetspeed also services Amherst, Easthapton, Ludlow, Agawam and Springfield, with ongoing expansions in Springfield.
