GREENFIELD — The path for local students to become pharmacists may have gotten smoother.

After two years at Greenfield Community College, students who qualify academically can apply for a transfer with Western New England University’s pharmacy program and, if accepted, earn a $15,000 scholarship for their first two years. They will also be guaranteed a spot, given they keep up their academic standing, in the university’s two-year Doctor of Pharmacy program.

Greenfield Community College’s Chief Academic and Student Affairs Officer Catherine Seaver said interest in the pharmacy field has been “popping up more and more.”

Administrators of the two schools envision a student spending the first two years of college in Greenfield, earning 67 credits, then applying for the transfer to Western New England University in Greenfield. If accepted, students will receive $15,000 for their “junior” and “senior” years, before rolling into their final two years for a doctorate in pharmacy.

Joshua Spooner, dean of student affairs at Western New England University, said students are still eligible for financial aid and other scholarships.

“For us, it’s an opportunity to keep local students in the local area,” Spooner said.
