Friday’s high schools: Palmer shuts down Granby boys basketball

With Zach Gorham approaching 1,000 points, the Granby boys basketball team struggled offensively in a 61-43 loss to Palmer on Friday night.

The Rams (11-8, 7-7) played well in the first quarter but scored nine points in the second and third, as the Panthers (17-1, 12-0 Bi County) pulled away.

Gorham finished with 11 points to lead Granby and now needs 12 to reach the milestone. The Rams host Belchertown on Wednesday in their final game of the regular season.

Ryan Sheehan had nine points on three 3-pointers.

Palmer’s Matt Niemczura hit 1,000 points in the second quarter in front of a sizable visiting crowd at Granby.

South Hadley 76, Belchertown 60 — Matt Grochowalski’s career-high 26 points carried the Tigers to a road win over the Orioles.

Calvin Bridges (22 points) and Nate Poirier (12 points) were also in double-figures for South Hadley (9-10, 5-8 Suburban).

Mitch Medina led the Orioles with 23 points. Nolan Vogel added 13 points for Belchertown (0-18).

Smith Vocational 51, Westfield Tech 46 —Sophomore Michael Brown knocked down six 3-pointers en route to a career-high 20 points, as the Vikings held off the Tigers at home.

Travis Wolf added 10 for Smith (5-13, 4-12 Tri-County).

Mohawk 66, Smith Academy 63 — Tied entering the fourth, the Warriors (4-13, 3-10 Hampshire) held off the Falcons (2-16, 1-5) in Hatfield.

Nick Leary had 21 points. He made seven of Smith’s 13 3-pointers.

Brett Gratz finished with nine points, six rebounds and seven assists, while Jack Zigmont added 13 points with three 3s and eight rebounds.

Easthampton 76, Renaissance 55 — Zach Crisafulli’s 32 points and Sophie Pek’s 20 points lift the Eagles (11-7, 10-3 Bi-County) past Renaissance. Crisafulli is 35 points shy of 1,000.

Northampton 63, West Springfield 55 — Henry Doherty’s 16 points (13 free throws) and Elijah Davis’ 13 points helped the Blue Devils (13-6, 5-4 Valley Wheel) win game two of the home-at-home series to finish the season.

Hampden Charter 70, Gateway 45 — Shane Mastello scored 18 points, but the Gators lost at home.

Brett Turban hit two 3-pointers and scored 13 points.

Ware 65, Hampshire 63 — The Raiders got clipped on the road by the Indians.

Jacob Bihler had 23 points while Greg Laroche added 15 for Hampshire (11-7, 8-5 Bi County).

Girls basketball

Granby 55, Palmer 18 — Mallory Beauregard had 12 points, and freshman Faith Bergeron added a career-high 11, as the Rams (9-9, 4-3 Central) moved within a win of qualifying for the postseason.

Granby visits Easthampton on Monday.

Kaeleigh Croteau, Kate Sullivan and Nora Young each had seven points in the win.

Monson 47, Hopkins Academy 44 OT — The Golden Hawks lost in overtime on the road.

Samantha Jenks had 24 points for Hopkins Academy (10-9).

Commerce 38, Gateway 29 — Bryanna Fellows had nine points, but the Gators (9-11, 6-2 Tri-County South) lost on the road.

Megan Wright added eight points, and Gabby Goralczyk had seven.

Gateway finished its regular season second in the Tri-County South standings.

Williston 55, Cheshire 43 — Olivia Bonavita had 17 points, while Sarah Sullivan and Sarah Marion each had 15 for the Wildcats at Choate Rosemary Hall.

Hockey

Belchertown 6, Turners Falls 2 — Raymond Langevin scored twice, while Zach Reidy, Vaughn Gillen (assist), Nathan Pacheco (assist) and Nathan Ayers (assist) scored once as the Orioles (8-6-2, 8-5-2 Fay-Wright) qualified for the postseason with the win at the Mullins Center Practice Rink.

Andrew Mugford recorded the first muli-point game of his career with two assists, while Chris Buffone also had two assists. Adam Mattingly, Justin Pendrick, Cam Cass and Zac Rajpold each had one helper.

Kyle Greene made 19 saves in the win.

Doug Hanieski and Ethan Lafleur each scored, while Bryce Jordan and Bryan Baumann each had one assist.

Jordan Lavallee had 27 saves for Turners (0-17, 0-14).

Easthampton 4, St. Mary’s 3 — Jake Delisle scored two goals in a home win to close out their season.

The Eagles (7-10-1, 5-10-1 Fay-Wright) scored three goals in the third period.

Matt Grimaldi added a goal and an assist for Easthampton. Garren Fugiel and Mike McColgan had two assists each.

CJ Tenczar found the net for the Eagles.

It was the final game for Easthampton seniors Nick Skowronek, Nick Kosuda and Grimaldi.

Nate Barners made 23 saves.
