Friday’s colleges: UMass, Vermont skate to 2-2 tie

The UMass hockey team’s celebration was short-lived.

With 4 minutes, 38 seconds remaining Johnny Leonard scored to put the Minutemen ahead, but Vermont answered 23 seconds later as the teams skated to a 2-2 tie, Friday at Gutterson Fieldhouse in Burlington, Vermont.

The teams play again Saturday at 7 p.m.

Cale Makar’s scoring touch at the world junior championships carried over in his return to the Minutemen (9-9-1, 3-5-1 Hockey East). The freshman defenseman scored 3:16 into the game to put UMass ahead 1-0.

Vermont tied the game early in the third to set up the final sequence. Matt Murray stopped 31 shots for UMass.

Men’s basketball

Amherst 72, Connecticut College 57 — Johnny McCarthy, Joseph Schneider and Michael Riopel each had 10 points as the Mammoths (9-4, 1-1 NESCAC) won at home.

Women’s basketball

Amherst 72, Connecticut College 40 — Madeline Eck had a career-high 19 points as the top-ranked Mammoths (15-0, 2-0 NESCAC) won their 32nd straight road game, an NCAA Division III record.

Cam Hendricks and Hannah Fox each had 10 points.

Women’s ice hockey

Amherst 3, Bowdoin 1 — Ava Simoncelli, Emma Flynn and Miriam Eickhoff each scored a goal as the Mammoths (7-5-1, 3-3-1 NESCAC) won on the road.
