No. 9 Amherst stops No. 3 Bowdoin

The ninth-ranked Amherst College women’s basketball team jumped on No. 3 Bowdoin and won 59-46, Friday at LeFrak Gymnasium.

The Mammoths (18-3, 5-2 NESCAC) led 16-0 after the first quarter. They held the Polar Bears to 0-for-11 shooting and seven turnovers in the frame.

Hannah Fox finished with 20 points and four steals, while Madeline Eck had 16 points, 10 rebounds, five steals and five assists.

Dani Valdez chipped in with 10 points.

Men’s basketball

Amherst 91, Bowdoin 80 — The Mammoths (15-6, 5-2 NESCAC) led by 19 at the break en route to the road win.

Garrett Day had 25 points and Fru Che added 16. Eric Sellew and Grant Robinson each had 13 points, while Josh Chery chipped in 12.

Women’s hockey

Amherst 3, Bowdoin 2 — Leslie Schwartz scored a power-play goal to spark the Mammoths, who netted three goals in the second period to overcome a 2-0 deficit en route to the road win.

Jillian Mazzocca (assist) and Angelina Wiater also scored. Carley Daly, Kaitlin Hoang and Emma Flynn each had one assist.Caitlin Walker made 17 saves.

Men’s hockey

Colby 1, Amherst 1 (OT) — Joey Lupo scored from Sean Wrenn an dPieter von Steinberg in the first period, but the Mammoths (6-9-4, 4-6-3 NESCAC) skated to a draw at Orr Rink.

Women’s tennis

ECAC Indoor Championships — UMass fell, 4-0, to Yale in the opening round at Columbia University in New York.
