NORTHAMPTON — Forbes Library Trustees will meet Thursday in public session to choose the library’s new director.

The meeting starts at 3:15 p.m. in the Coolidge Museum and will include a public comment period. The chosen director will begin Jan. 1, at which point current Director Janet Moulding will retire after about 12 years in the position.

Trustees spent the past several weeks narrowing down the 28-person pool of candidates to four finalists: Lynn Piotrowicz, director of the Tucker Free Library in Henniker, New Hampshire; Matthew DeLaney, administrative director of the Onondaga County Public Library in Syracuse, New York; Adam Novitt, director of the Lilly Library in Florence; and Lisa Downing, assistant director and patron services librarian at Forbes Library.

“We want someone who listens to the community, who reaches out to the community,” said Marjorie Hess, vice president of the trustees, adding that libraries are increasingly serving as community centers. “I think we need someone who understands that role.”
