This replies to Ms. Cindy Mahoney’s letter commenting on the Feb. 4 Gazette article about the ice cream-eating contest at Herrell’s in Northampton. Certainly, suffering continues throughout the world. Ms. Mahoney’s concern highlights her sensitivity for others. This is admirable. Herrell’s did no disservice to anyone. A fun contest is a fun contest. We see running contests knowing many in the world are unable to walk. Yes, it’s not the same, yet we so need diversions, fun and play to offset our daily grind. Although, donations to good causes are necessary, announced giving is not charity. Oh, what would we all have said to the goldfish-eating contests back when? Herrell’s conducted a well-thought-out event that was open to the public, and 19 contestants had good taste, no matter the flavor.
