AMHERST — As the town’s first medical marijuana dispensary prepares to open next week in North Amherst, a retail location for recreational cannabis sales is being pitched for a downtown site.

Green Biz LLC of Avon is looking to bring wholesale cultivated products to 37-39 Boltwood Walk, Amherst’s Economic Development Director Geoff Kravitz said. The space was most recently used by Fire and Water Yoga Studio and Juice Bar.

Before the recreational marijuana shop can open, though, the business has to conduct mandated community outreach, including a public meeting that is scheduled for Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Hangar Pub and Grill at 10 University Drive.

Kravitz said the meeting must happen six months before the company applies for a state license. The company will also have to sign a host community agreement and get a special permit from the Zoning Board of Appeals, Kravitz said.

RISE Amherst, a medical marijuana dispensary, is scheduled to open May 21 at 169 Meadow St., a site that was long used as an auction gallery.

A ribbon-cutting with the Amherst Area Chamber of Commerce and town officials will take place Wednesday beginning at noon and include tours of the facility, which has been under renovation.

RISE will only be selling medical products when it opens. Three additional medical marijuana establishments proposed for locations on University Drive remain in various stages of permitting.

RISE is part of Green Thumb Industries, a national marijuana cultivator, processor and dispensary operator based in Chicago. GTI has a chain of retail cannabis stores and 27 operational licenses under the RISE Dispensaries banner in the United States.
