MONTGOMERY, Mass. (AP) — A Massachusetts firefighter has died while battling an overnight house fire.

A spokeswoman for the state Fire Marshal says the firefighter collapsed at the scene of the fire in Montgomery reported at about 11 p.m. Tuesday and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Montgomery is a town of fewer than 1,000 residents west of Springfield.

The firefighter's name was not immediately made public and the cause of death remains under investigation.

The fire started in the chimney and spread to the main structure. The residents were alerted by smoke alarms and escaped unharmed. The home is considered a total loss.

Several surrounding departments responded to the scene with tanker trucks because Montgomery does not have hydrants.

The blaze's cause is under investigation but preliminary findings indicate that it was accidental.
