PELHAM — A Saturday evening kitchen fire at a home on Buffam Road killed two cats and injured one person.

Just after 8 p.m., the Pelham Fire Department received a report of the kitchen fire, according to a post on the department’s Facebook page. Amherst and Shutesbury fire departments also responded.

Before authorities arrived, the tenant arrived home and attempted unsuccessfully to rescue her two cats inside, according to the Fire Department. The tenant breathed in smoke and was transported to Baystate Medical Center.

An attempt Sunday evening to contact the department for information on the extent of the fire damage was unsiccessful. The cause of the fire is under investigation, according to the department.
