HOLYOKE — The cause of a Friday night fire at a two-story home in Holyoke is under investigation.

Holyoke firefighters responded to 244 Rock Valley Road at 7:30 p.m. for a report of a structure fire. When they arrived, firefighters found heavy fire showing from the second floor as well as through an open section of the roof of the single-family home, according to a post on the Holyoke Fire Department’s Facebook page.

The house is located down a very long dirt driveway, well off Rock Valley Road, but firefighters were able to lay a large diameter hose from a hydrant out on Rock Valley Road, according to the post.

One of the challenges the department cited in extinguishing the fire was wind gusts, which exacerbated the flames.

While firefighters were able to put out the exterior portion of the fire rather quickly, the roof and rafters of the home took two hours to fully extinguish, according to the Fire Department.

The two residents that were home at the time of the fire were able to escape without injuries.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown and is being investigated by state troopers assigned to the state Fire Marshal’s office.
