BECKET — A Ludlow man was killed Friday afternoon when the car he was driving was hit from behind by a tractor-trailer on the Massachusetts Turnpike in Becket, state police reported Sunday.

Police said the collision occurred in the eastbound lanes in traffic that was slowing. The truck struck the back of a Toyota Camry driven by Gary Litwin, 69. His car was in turn pushed into a Toyota Sienna van, police said.

Litwin and his passenger were taken by ambulance to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, where he was pronounced dead. His passenger, a 66-year-old Ludlow woman, suffered serious injuries, police said.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, a 67-year-old man from West Granby, Conn., was not injured. He will be charged criminally, police said, with details to be announced Monday.

The driver of the Sienna, a 39-year-old West Springfield woman, was transported to Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield for examination of possible injuries.
