Easthampton Post 224 survives 7 errors to beat Ludlow

A late big inning offset some fielding troubles at Daley Field on Friday, as the Easthampton Post 224 American Legion baseball team beat Ludlow Post 52, 9-8, despite committing seven errors.

“I don’t know if I’ve ever won a game giving up seven errors,” Easthampton coach Kevin Wilby said.

Easthampton (4-9) scored four runs in the fifth inning to rally from an 8-5 deficit and take an 8-7 lead.

Jake Constantine hit a two-run single in that inning. John Carey drew a bases-loaded walk, and Cam Ziomek was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

“They were walking a ton of guys,” Wilby said.

Matt Hewes and Tim Fay both singled twice and had an RBI each.

Gage Fortin picked up the win in relief. He pitched the final three innings, allowing just two walks and striking out three for Post 224.

Northampton 9, Greenfield 2 — Dillon Diemand drove in three runs on two hits, as Post 28 picked up its ninth American Legion win of the summer.

Nick Heafey and Aidan Chapdelaine had two RBIs each.

Devin Kellog added three hits and scored a run for Northampton (9-3).

Mike Mieczkowski scored twice, while Andy Gregorcewicz had an RBI and a run.

Zac Brittain picked up the win, throwing 6⅓ innings allowing just four hits and two runs before he hit his pitch limit. Adam Chapdelaine finished the game out.

Southampton 8, Belchertown 1 — Will Hogan made an impact on the mound and at the plate, as Southampton bested Belchertown in the 11-12 Little League District 2 tournament semifinals. He hit a homer and finished with three RBIs while striking out eight with just one run pitching.

Phil McKay also homered.

Tommy O’Connor and Aidan Miklasiewicz each singled twice.

Jake Boyle, Brendan Capshaw and Zachary Phakos also drove in runs for Southampton.

Southampton is 1-0 in the double-elimination final four and will play Amherst at 10 a.m. Saturday at Contant Park in Southampton.

Connor Gregoire hit an RBI double for Belchertown.

Brady Perkins had three hits. Belchertown will play an elimination game against Westfield American on Saturday.

Amherst 3, Westfield American 0 — Piet Hartman, Charlie May and Elijah Rubinstein pitched a combined shutout for Amherst in the Little League District 2 11-12 tournament semifinals.

May also drove in a run on a sacrifice fly.

Neil Cunniffe singled then stole second. He scored on single by Liam Stewart.

Shane Bussard made a diving catch in center field and threw a runner out in the fifth.

Belchertown 15, Westfield 5 (4) — Alex Ryczek went 4 for 4 with two RBIs in a 7-9 Division District 2 tournament win.

Luke Heroux and Sophia Mitus both had their first hits and RBIs of the tournament.

Softball

Southampton 16, Frontier Red 1 — Ashley Taylor had two hits and an RBI in a home loss.

Brianna Storozuk, Cassidi Mushenski and Ariana Miller all singled for Forntier Red (2-2).
