Editor’s note: We will do better

Published: 9/18/2020 11:32:41 AM

The Gazette wants to apologize for publishing a letter to the editor that ran earlier this week (“Responding to Fleitman”) and reinforced anti-Semitic tropes and ideas. Our usual format when printing corrections is to not repeat the error but rather to rectify it. As such, we will not republish the offending words here but instead make a promise to be more discerning and aware when reading and publishing letters to the editor in the future. We want readers to know that we are deeply sorry for the anger and hurt this letter has caused, particularly painful during the Jewish High Holy Days. Thank you to our readers and community members who have written and shared their outrage in response, educating all of us. Going forward, we will do better.
