Easthampton Screaming Eagles win U12 USA Softball state championship

A shutdown pitching staff led the Western Mass Screaming Eagles to the U12 USA Softball state championship in Greenfield over the weekend.

Avery Brooks, Jocelyn Mettey annd Brie Widelo allowed just three runs in five games, as Easthampton went 5-0 to win the state title.

The Screaming Eagles, with players based in Easthampton and Southampton, beat the Central Mass Diamonds 9-1 in the championship. Widelo allowed just five hits and one run with five strikeouts. She also singled twice.

Hailey Woecki had four hits, while Mettey had three.

McKenzie McCarthy drove in three runs on two hits, while Ashley Cortis had two hits.

In the semifinals, Mettey struck out 12 in a one-hitter. McCarthy and Moja Premny had two hits in the game.

Mettey and Wodecki drove in two runs each.

The Screaming Eagles defeated the Franklin County Crush, Central Mass Voodo and Central Mass Stingers in the tournament.

They also won the Memorial Day Bash and the Queen of Diamonds Tournaments in East Hartford this summer.

Avery Brooks, Emma Czarnecki, Katie Trudeau, Jessica Cloutier, Abby McClaflin and Maria Konieczny make up the rest of the team, while Chris Mettey, Mike Wodecki, Lori McClaflin and Scott McCarthy are the coaches.
