EASTHAMPTON — A ceremonial groundbreaking will be held for the new K-8 school on the grounds of White Brook Middle School on Friday, in what Mayor Nicole LaChapelle describes as “a great symbol of hope for our community.”

The ceremony will take place from 11 a.m. to noon, although Superintendent Allison LeClair said that she doesn’t think it will take the full hour.

Construction of the 176,155-square-foot school has been under way for months, but the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the ceremonial groundbreaking.

“I think it’s symbolic of celebrating that the community is moving forward with this school,” LeClair said.

LaChapelle said that the ceremony has been rearranged due to the pandemic, and will not be open to the public, with only a few officials in attendance. However, it will be televised and broadcast on Easthampton Media, as well as Easthampton Media’s YouTube channel.

The mayor said that the moorings for the building have been completed, and the actual building is now being worked on.

“You can see the outline of what the school’s going to look like,” she said.

LeClair also noted the progress that’s been made on the school. “All the framing is up,” she said. “They’re working on the inside.”

Tom Brown, chairman of the School Building Committee, said that the school is “onschedule and on budget.”

He added that having students learning remotely and not at White Brook has made for faster progress on the entrance and the roadway of the project.

He and LeClair also noted that exterior brickwork on the building is ready to begin soon.

“That part of the project will continue all winter,” Brown said.

LaChapelle said that the goal is to have students in the building in January of 2022.
