EASTHAMPTON — Two people were taken to the hospital after a crash sent a car off the road and into the woods on Route 5 early Tuesday afternoon.

A white Volkswagen sedan was struck by a truck as it pulled out of East Street onto Route 5 heading south, according to Easthampton Police Officer Ed Murray.

“The (car) pulled into the oncoming southbound pickup truck; the pickup truck made contact with the (car), causing it to spin and end up in the bushes,” Murray said.

Easthampton Fire Chief David Mottor said the driver’s side door of the Volkswagen had to be removed by emergency workers as it was stuck shut.

Mottor said the Volkswagen might have become airborne on impact, since there weren’t any skid marks on the road.

Murray said the driver of the Volkswagen had “substantial injuries,” though they did not appear to be life-threatening. He said the driver of the truck had complaints of pain but was OK. Both were taken to the hospital.
