NORTHAMPTON — A motorist struck and injured a pedestrian in a Main Street crosswalk Sunday afternoon.

The woman was knocked to the ground in the crosswalk at the intersection of Main and Masonic streets at around 12:30 p.m. The driver of the car immediately stopped and got out to check on the pedestrian.

Police and Northampton Fire Rescue arrived on the scene shortly, blocking traffic as the woman was put on a stretcher. A caller described the woman as “semi-alert and breathing,” according to a police log.

A section of Main Street was closed to traffic during the emergency response.

The woman was taken to Baystate Medical Center, according to police. Police did not identify the woman or the driver.

Northampton Police Sgt. Josef Barszcz said that the incident is still under investigation and that it was unclear whether any charges had been filed against the driver.
