SOUTH DEERFIELD — South County EMS’ new 88 Greenfield Road building is under construction.

Work crews contracted by Deerfield Academy broke ground recently on a $484,000, 4,000-square-foot, wood-frame, three-bay ambulance garage next to the fire station, according to town building records.

Jessica Day, a Deerfield Academy spokeswoman, said work should be completed by next spring. Once complete, the regional ambulance company will permanently move across the parking lot from the South Deerfield Fire Station, its main base of operations for the past few years. A few ambulances are also being kept at the Whately and Sunderland fire departments.

Completion will also mark the end of a years-long debate, starting with the EMS service’s inception about four years ago, over which of the three participating towns would serve as home base.

Most recently, the Old Deerfield prep school agreed to pay for the building at the request of Deerfield Selectman Henry “Kip” Komosa.
