EASTHAMPTON — It’s that time of year again. Cultural Chaos will take place on Saturday from 12 to 5 p.m. in Easthampton’s Cottage Street Cultural District.
Cultural Chaos is an annual street festival that celebrates the arts and culture of Cottage Street, and is presented by Easthampton City Arts in conjunction with the Cottage Street Cultural District Committee. It is also made possible by the support of sponsors and efforts from over 100 volunteers.
“Cultural Chaos is an incredibly beloved street festival, largely because it is a grassroots festival that prioritizes local artists, musicians, poets, performers and street vendors,” said Pasqualina Azzarello, the arts and culture program director for the city of Easthampton and coordinator of Easthampton City Arts. “We rely on the dedicated efforts of volunteers to bring this vision to life.”
Each year, more than 10,000 participants travel from near and far to take part in the “chaos,” and dozens of businesses open their doors to join in the celebration. In fact, the event isn’t chaotic at all — it’s a community coordinated effort that has been expanded and improved year after year.
Cultural Chaos began in 2013 as an initiative of the Massachusetts Cultural Council’s Cultural District program, and has grown each year since. Aside from being a celebration of local culture, “Cultural Chaos is also a deeply meaningful economic driver in the city of Easthampton,” said Azzarello.
A past survey conducted with the University of Massachusetts Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning program found that Cultural Chaos marked the highest grossing day of the year for local businesses open during the festival.
Admission to the festival is free, and participants of all ages can find something to enjoy. Additionally, a bike valet will be available to those who bike to the event.
This year’s celebration will feature three stages of live music, BMX performances presented by Still Services, and an expanded “Community in Motion” dance stage, which will provide a full day of performances by local and regional groups curated by Art In Motion. Dance performances will take place at the Cottage Street stage, and will showcase talent from North County Line Dancers, Amherst Ballet, Stepping Up Dance Center, Snap Fitness, Heart, SHINE, Cassin Academy, The Reset, Art In Motion, Crescent Dancers and Safe Spaces Latin Dance.
