State’s new virus cases drop below 500

NORTHAMPTON — The state Department of Public Health reported 422 new cases of confirmed COVID-19 infections on Tuesday and 57 new deaths. There are now 93,693 confirmed cases statewide and 6,473 deaths.

The state reported that 4,920 new tests were conducted Tuesday, with 545,481 tests performed overall.

The state has reported 840 confirmed cases of the coronavirus infection and 82 deaths from it in Hampshire County, 315 cases and 47 deaths in Franklin County and 5,796 cases and 546 deaths in Hampden County.

Across the state, 2,108 are hospitalized with the virus, 560 of whom are in intensive care units. These numbers are down from about 3,100 hospitalized and 818 in intensive care two weeks ago.

The state reported two new deaths among veteran residents at the Holyoke Soldiers’ Home on Tuesday, bringing the facility’s total number of deaths during the pandemic to 92 veteran residents as of Tuesday. Seventy-six of those residents tested positive for COVID-19, 15 tested negative, and one resident’s results are unknown.

Eighty-four employees of the long-term care home have also tested positive for the virus.

The number of deaths at long-term care facilities rose to 3,924 — or about 60% of all COVID-19-related deaths in the state.

Area hospitals

Cooley Dickinson Hospital is treating six inpatients with confirmed COVID-19 infection as of Tuesday, four of whom are in the intensive care unit.

An additional 13 outpatients are under investigation for COVID-19 infection. The hospital has had 715 people test positive overall.

Baystate Health is treating 63 inpatients, all of whom are hospitalized at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, for confirmed COVID-19 infection, including 16 patients in critical care units.

Twenty-four inpatients are under investigation for COVID-19 infection.

Baystate has tested 12,312 people to date, with 1,677 results coming back positive, 10,582 negative, and 53 pending results.
