State’s COVID-19 cases top 70,000, but growth rate slows

NORTHAMPTON — The Massachusetts Department of Public Health reported 1,184 new cases of confirmed COVID-19 infections on Tuesday and 122 new deaths. There are now 70,271 confirmed cases statewide and 4,212 deaths.

For Hampshire County, the state reported 575 confirmed cases Tuesday, an increase of 12 from the previous day, and 47 deaths, 11 more than on Monday. In Franklin County, there are 275 cases and 37 deaths, and 4,203 cases and 415 deaths in Hampden County.

The state has carried out 333,349 tests, 9,081 of which were new on Tuesday.

Area hospitals

Cooley Dickinson Hospital was treating 15 inpatients with confirmed COVID-19 infection as of Tuesday, three of whom were in the intensive care unit.

An additional 18 outpatients are under investigation for COVID-19 infection. The hospital has had 512 people test positive overall.

Baystate Health is treating 91 inpatients for confirmed COVID-19 infection across all of its hospitals, including 11 patients in critical care units. Of those hospitalized, 85 are at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield.

Twenty-nine inpatients are under investigation for COVID-19 infection.

Baystate has tested 7,415 people to date, with 1,253 results coming back positive, 6,083 negative, and 79 pending results.
