Questions placement of Olympics stories

Long ago I learned that in newspaper layout, the top half of the page — above the fold — should be occupied by the most important stories on the page.

Your page D2 on Feb. 22 confused me. Above the fold were two stories about the USA men’s hockey team’s loss at the Pyeongchang Olympics. Below the fold were two stories about historic wins by female USA team skiers and skaters in the same place on the same day.

Is there an explanation for this editorial choice?
